Turn Your Boring Workspace into a Nest of Productivity!

Boring Workspace into a Nest of Productivity

You have the laptop, the headphones and maybe even a printer/scanner/copier combination. But if your workspace isn’t doing anything to encourage productivity, it’s doing you a disservice. Believe it or not, the energy you need to be productive, creative and innovative starts with your environment. And if it’s boring, stuffy or bland, well, it’s likely not helping to make your work crazy creative and interesting. If you want to give your work life a little boost and get that creative energy flowing, start with your space.

Keep your “cool” (or your heat)

When you’re working, if you’re not comfortable, you’re likely not going to get in “the zone” anytime soon. That includes something as oft-overlooked as the room temperature. Of course, if you work in someone else’s office, it may be difficult to control the office climate, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put your two cents in. And if you’re working in your home or office space, well, set the temperature for success. But keep this in mind: even if you love pumping the air conditioner, you might be doing yourself a disservice by doing so. Studies have shown that productivity increases with temperatures higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Who knew?

Let there be light.

There’s a reason C-level executives snag those beautiful corner offices with floor-to-ceiling windows; not only is the view better than any other office in the building, but natural light can increase your productivity. In studies, when compared to workers who worked in spaces without windows, those with windows were far more productive. Also, a higher concentration of natural light can help you sleep better and longer at night and decrease your stress levels. If windows aren’t an option for you, try to fake it! LED lights will give you more of the “daylight” affect than those “normal” light bulbs.

“Plant” the right energy.

You might not have a green thumb, but that doesn’t mean your workspace can’t fake it. If you’re looking for an office accessory to brighten your space and possibly even make you more productive, opt for a living, green thing (preferably not an alien). Studies show that having plant life around you while working can make you 15 percent more productive. So head to Home Depot and grab your favorite fern, orchid or succulent.

Get mellow with yellow.

It may be known for being “mellow,” but you might not know that the color of sunshine can make you more productive! Yellow is known to be cheerful and full of life, and that’s exactly how a few yellow accents (or an entire yellow wall) can make you feel while you work. You don’t need to go overboard with the hue, but a few strategic pops of color might just give your work a creative and productive little boost.

Monitor wisely.

These days, you can get just about everything done on a laptop or tablet. But when you’re hunkering down for a good, productive work session, set yourself up for success with something a little more robust. Space is your friend not only in your physical office but also concerning your digital gear. Set your workstation up with at least two computer monitors to allow you to have multiple windows, programs or applications visible at once. Finally, you won’t miss an email just because you’re elbow-deep in your spreadsheet.
